Halloween SHortbread cookie baking and decorating tips

  • Defrost Classic Vanilla Shortbread dough overnight in fridge or for several hours at room temperature.

  • Keep dough chilled while rolling and cutting. Dust work surfaces lightly with flour and repeat as necessary.

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Chill cookies on baking sheet for at least 20 minutes before baking.

  • Bake cookies at 325 degrees for 12 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Rotate sheet pan halfway through for even baking.

  • Cool cookies before decorating

  • Make Royal Icing and tint with food coloring (use gel colors for the most vibrant shades). Transfer to squeeze bottles for precise outlining and filling. To decorate, outline the outside edge with icing then fill in roughly with icing squiggles and smooth with a toothpick.

  • Alternatively, dip cookies face down in a bowl of royal icing. Add sprinkles or other decorations and let dry on a baking sheet.

  • Let icing fully dry before adding a second color on top, e.g., putting faces on pumpkins, ghosts or bats.

  • Leave a thin space between colors when applying more than one to the cookie surface. Dab with the end of a toothpick to fill in.
